Prof. Chow is well-known for his groundbreaking research in molecular endocrinology, with a particular emphasis on G-protein coupled receptors, secretin (the first hormone identified), and the discovery of new bioactive peptides. In recent years, his work has shifted towards translational research in drug discovery and exploring the medicinal applications of pearl powder, resulting in the creation of two spinoff companies.

Pearl power, one of these spinoffs, aims to capitalize on the natural properties and health benefits of pearl powder by developing innovative, sustainable, and effective wellness products that foster holistic well-being. As Founder and Chief Scientific Advisor, Prof. Chow's expertise in endocrinology and drug discovery is instrumental in driving the company's success.

  • Dr. Yan started his early career in the financial sector. He was a registered Investment Advisor. Yan was the founder and managing director of an asset management company and a brokerage house. He was also a director of a listed company in Hong Kong. He was also involved in direct investment, mergers and acquisitions, and startup businesses.

He returned to the University of Hong Kong for his PhD in 2015. Yan’s PhD research was about pearl oyster culture in Hong Kong at the School of Biological Sciences. He specializes in pearl oyster culture, biofouling control in aquaculture and aquaculture economics. As he has been working with fishermen at different mariculture zones for a very long time and was appointed to various advisory bodies related to agriculture and fisheries of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, he knows much about the mariculture industry in Hong Kong. He developed a good working relationship with local fishermen.

  • Dr. Zhang Fengwei is a highly accomplished postdoctoral researcher at the University of Hong Kong, with a Ph.D. in Neuroscience. His research spans neuropharmacology, small molecular drug R&D, and innovative functional material development. Zhang's current work focuses on exploring the potential health benefits of nano pearl powder, particularly its role in optimizing gut microbiota. He is leading a groundbreaking study investigating how pearl powder from Pteria martensii affects intestinal microbial communities, potentially uncovering new applications for this traditional material in modern health contexts. Zhang's multidisciplinary background, combining expertise in neuroscience, pharmacology, and microbiome research, uniquely positions him to advance our understanding of pearl powder's bioactive properties and its implications for human health and wellness.

  • Dr. Shaik Abdullah Nawabjan is an early-career researcher in regulatory toxicology who earned his PhD in drug toxicology from the University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on discovering and characterizing new anti-hypertensive compounds, with a strong emphasis on safety and compliance with FDA and OECD guidelines. Currently, as a postdoctoral researcher at a spin-off company led by Professor Billy KC Chow, he studies the medicinal benefits of pearl powder, exploring its detoxification properties for heavy metals and antioxidant effects on animal models. He is investigating the biological effects of pearl powder, paving the way for transformative new treatments. Dr. Abdullah has received many fellowships and awards, including the People's Choice Award at the Global Young Scientists Summit in 2023, the Excellent Teaching Assistant Award in 2020-2021 from the Faculty of Science, and the IBRO School Fellowship in 2019 from the International Brain Research Organization. He is dedicated to making a positive impact on the world through his research and is committed to scientific excellence and contributing to society.

  • Muthu Iswarya Gandhi Sethuraman is a research assistant with a passion for addressing societal needs. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology from Anna University, India, and won the 'InSc Student Project Program 2020' award for her research on the Radiolytic degradation of Ofloxacin. Muthu secured an All India Ranking of 799 in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2020 and pursued a Master's degree in Biotechnology at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, India. Her postgraduate studies focused on statistical modelling and optimization of reactive extraction of β – alanine, a non-essential amino acid used in supplements for muscle building and athletic performance enhancement. She has expertise in design of experiments and process optimization. Muthu's current research involves studying the health advantages of pearl powder and its potential for heavy metal detoxification and antioxidant properties. Through animal model research, she aims to investigate the medicinal benefits of pearl powder. Her studies on the biological effects of pearl powder are opening up avenues for revolutionary treatments.

  • Choi Wai Yan, Yannes is a research assistant with a Bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (Intensive) from the University of Hong Kong.

Throughout her academic years, she has developed a keen interest in the ecological and medical fields. Her final year project aimed to detect three pathogens (Beak and Feather Disease Virus, Avian Polyomavirus, and Chlamydia Psittaci) in pet birds and investigate their transmission between birds and humans. She believes that through scientific research, we can find solutions to pressing issues that affect our environment and health.

Currently, Yannes is researching the health impacts of pearl powder extracted from local pearl oysters. She is intrigued by the potential of natural remedies and hopes to contribute to the development of alternative medicine. She hopes to establish a connection between the local culture, ecology, and the medical field. She is committed to making a positive impact on society and is continuously seeking opportunities to expand her skills and knowledge in the scientific field.
