Fisheries Enhancement Fund

The Airport Authority (AA) has committed to implementing a Marine Ecology and Fisheries Enhancement Strategy (MEFES) as part of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study for the three-runway system. The MEFES aims to enhance the marine environment, benefit marine ecology (including Chinese White Dolphins), and improve fisheries resources in the project area, Hong Kong's western waters, and the Pearl River Estuary. The MEFES also provides support to affected fishers and promotes sustainable fishing operations.

In 2021, ‘Study on the Detoxification Function of Hong Kong Pearl Oyster (Pinctada imbricata) Powder’ was conducted. The project used molecular biology methods to study the effects of pearl powder on detoxifying aluminium, lead, mercury, and hexachlorobenzene. It received HKD 1.326 million in funding from the Fishery Enhancement Fund (FEF2022001).

In 2022, another research project studied the detoxification function of Hong Kong Pearl Oyster (Pinctada imbricata) Powder using in vitro and in vivo models. The project received HKD 1.505 million in funding from the Fishery Enhancement Fund (FEF2021003).

Use of Pearl Oyster Shell Powder in the Preparation of Antioxidants
